How can I repaint my CR Railing?
Some of the questions you might have when it comes to changing the color of our black CR Handrail:
- Can I repaint the railing?
- Should I use spray paint or a brush?
- Do I need a primer first?
Short Answer to Change Rail Color:
Yes, you can paint over the black powder coated surface. Primer is always needed for best bond adhesion. Either spray paint or a brush will work.
Detailed Answer to Change Rail Color:
The reason we exclusively use powder coat is the finish it delivers.
Some of the challenges with finishing we should consider:
- How scratch resistant is the finish?
- Will the paint flake or peel off easily?
- Does the paint have UV protective properties?
- Will the paint withstand the extreme heat (metal heats up quite a bit) as well as the cold (possibly snow/ice?)?
- Will the paint chalk / change color over time?
- Will the finish become uneven in sheen or color over time?
Best Solution for changing color:
Powder coat your rail a different color-
You can go to a local powder coating shop to sand blast all the finish off and redo the paint. This is the best way to change the color for the long run. Each piece/part typically costs anywhere from $15-$25 depending on the size and company you use — prices vary by shop and region, so call for a current quote.
Note: CR Handrail does not offer color customization except for large commercial projects — contact us for current lead times and a quote. CR Handrail ONLY offers 10% gloss powder coated black.
Paint your rail a different color-
If you like to keep the cost down, here's what we suggest: get a self-etching primer and a small can of quality exterior paint (your local paint store will be best able to advise you based on local laws & climate recommendation).
Spray paint will provide the best finish but does require some skills to do this without having drips/legs.
Roller/paint brush with a can of paint is easiest to apply but will not provide as smooth of a finish.
