How to Measure Your Stairs Handrail

Overlay Image

Measure the total run of the stairs in feet

This is the distance between the edge of the first step landing and the edge of the top landing

If your steps are uniform, simply measure the run or length of each step and multiply it by the number of steps. Otherwise, measure and add them individually or use a measuring tape.

In this example, each step is 10.75” and we have 4 steps. The total total run is 43” or 3’7”.

Round Up the total run

This will determine which variant of our handrail kit will fit best

In step 1, our total run was 3’7”. We round this up to 4’. Therefore, the recommended handrail kit to be installed is our CRHR4.

Note:

This method also works for uneven and odd steps, or longer and less steps.

Ensure sufficient horizontal clearance

Measure the distance between the bottom landing (a bit beyond the edge of the first step landing) and the top landing (beyond the edge of the top landing). This distance must be greater than the required clearance

Make sure you have enough room for the handrail to be installed end-to-end.

Doors and walls should be accounted for when measuring the required clearance. In this example, the CRHR4 needs a minimum of 56” to comfortably fit.

Clearance Troubleshooting

If the top landing does not have enough space and horizontal clearance falls short of the required distance, you will have a number of options

Option A: Move bottom post to bottom landing

Option B: Move Top Rail further down

Option C: Cut Top rail and Middle rail. Instructions will be provided in your kit on How to Cut your Top and Middle rail

Option D: Size down to a shorter variant. In this case, the CRHR3
