Step 1: Decide the position of your handrail post (on step or on landing)
Step 1: Decide the position of your handrail post (on step or on landing)

The position of your handrail’s top post will decide how the handrail extension meets the wall.

Post on the landing(recommended): The extension connects higher from the ground and closer to the wall.

Post on the last step before landing: The extension sits lower and extends farther away from the wall.

Step 2: Measure the distance from your top handrail post to the wall
Step 2: Measure the distance from your top handrail post to the wall

If the distance is less than or equal to 4.5’, use a handrail extension (HR4Ext). You can cut the handrail extension to size if the distance measures < 4.5’. In case it’s more than 4.5’, install a flat rail instead.

Step 3: Connect the extension bar to verify before installing wall brackets
Step 3: Connect the extension bar to verify before installing wall brackets

Attach the adjustable bracket on the top rail of your handrail, and insert the extension bar. Extend it to the wall and verify if it’s level using a bubble leveller. Refer to this positioning for placement of wall brackets.

Installation Guide for This Configuration
Step 1: Decide the position of your handrail post (on step or on landing)
Step 1: Decide the position of your handrail post (on step or on landing)

This will decide which flat rail kit you use. Post on the landing: You will require a 40” flat rail, because the height of the handrail’s top rail from the ground is ~40”.

Post on the last step before landing: You will need a 36” flat rail.

Step 2: Leave sufficient space between the handrail and flat rail
Step 2: Leave sufficient space between the handrail and flat rail

If you’re installing the handrail and flat rail posts on the landing, ensure that you leave at least 4” of space between the two. This will ensure proper alignment of both your top rails.

Step 3: Assemble the flat rail unit first or install on the landing directly
Step 3: Assemble the flat rail unit first or install on the landing directly

You can choose to assemble the entire flat rail unit first, and then secure the posts on the landing. Alternatively, you can install first post directly on the landing, and use the middle bar as reference to mark position of the second post.

Installation Guide for This Configuration
Step 1: Measure your space and choose the right configuration
Step 1: Measure your space and choose the right configuration

This configuration covers your stairs and two sides of a landing - with a 90° bend. If the distance from the edge of your stair landing and corner is < 4.5’, you can use a handrail extension to cover the gap between your flat rail and handrail. If it’s more than 4.5’, choosing flat rail kits is recommended.

Step 2: Leave sufficient space between the handrail and flat rail
Step 2: Leave sufficient space between the handrail and flat rail

If you’re installing the handrail and flat rail posts on top of the landing, ensure that you leave at least 4” of space between the two. This will ensure proper alignment of both your top rails.

Step 3: Ensure you have 2 sets of top rail connectors
Step 3: Ensure you have 2 sets of top rail connectors

Irrespective of which configuration you choose, you will require two different top rail connectors – one to attach the stair handrail to the flat rail, and the other to connect two top rails at the corner (accounting for the 90° turn).

In this configuration, you will only need one type of connector - the fixed 90° connector for corners (unless you decide to alter your setup to fit your stair-landing setup.

Installation Guide for This Configuration
Step 1: Choose the right handrail kit - easier install, better value
Step 1: Choose the right handrail kit - easier install, better value

For very long runs of stairways, it is recommended that you buy our 6-Step Stair Handrail (HR5). This way, you will get full coverage across your stairs, in fewer units. You will also need to install fewer posts - making it easier and faster.

Step 2: Avoid installing two posts on the same step
Step 2: Avoid installing two posts on the same step

Even if you have space on the same step, leave gap between two stair handrail posts. Your handrail’s top rail protrudes out by a few inches; the gap at the base allows enough space for the top rail connector to fit in seamlessly.

Step 1: Choose the position of your handrail & flat rail posts

This will decide which flat rail kit you use. Post on the landing: You might choose to do this if your landing is wide. You’ll need a 40” flat rail, because the height of the handrail’s top rail from the ground is ~40”.

Post on the last step before landing: You will need a 36” flat rail.

Step 2: Check if you need to mix & match handrail/flat rail types
Step 2: Check if you need to mix & match handrail/flat rail types

For uneven stair and landings, you might want to buy kits of appropriate sizes. For instance, for wider landings, you can use the 6’ flat rail and for longer stairways, you can use a 5 or 6-step handrail. You’ll get complete coverage and will need to install fewer posts, while getting better value.

Step 1: Decide the position of your handrail post (on step or on landing)
Step 1: Decide the position of your handrail post (on step or on landing)

Post on the landing: Make sure you’re leaving at least 4” of space between your guard rail post and handrail post.

Post on the last step before landing: There will be a significant gap between your handrail post and guard rail post – it could be a safety hazard.

Step 2: Drill Holes in handrail post to create a continuous run
Step 2: Drill Holes in handrail post to create a continuous run

You can build a continuous run by drilling holes into the top post of your stair handrail. Place the brackets of your guard rail kit (using balusters as height reference), mark the points on the handrail post, and drill holes using a 120mm drill bit.

Step 3: Terminate your guard rail at the wall or use end posts
Step 3: Terminate your guard rail at the wall or use end posts

If your guard rail ends/begins at a wall, you can directly drill the adjustable brackets into the wall. Alternatively, you might need to buy end post kits for the guard rail (which has pre-drilled holes on one side only) to complete your railing system.

Step 1: Space out and install the posts first
Step 1: Space out and install the posts first

Mark the positions and install the posts first. Whether it’s on stairs or on a flat surface, you might not want to keep a lot of space between the two posts. If there’s excess space, the cable might not provide enough strength and support to the railing.

Step 2: Make sure to install the right cable protectors
Step 2: Make sure to install the right cable protectors

We provide cable protector sleeves for straight runs of the cable, and special angled ones for corner posts, for 90° turns. Make sure you insert cable protector sleeves into the holes before threading the cable in, to avoid wear and premature cutting of the cable due to tension.

Step 3: You might need to enlarge the holes on your cable post
Step 3: You might need to enlarge the holes on your cable post

While terminating your cable railing on the final post, the adjustable cable terminal might be thicker than the pre-drilled holes on the post. In this case, you might have to use a drill to bore out the holes to make sure it fits.

FAQ

I have a small set of 2 steps that lead to a porch. What do I need?

One Stairs Handrail Kit, one Flat Rail Kit, and one Straight Adjustable Connector. The length of the flat rail kit will depend upon the distance between your stair handrail and wall/end of your porch.

Do I need to cut my rails if they don’t align perfectly?

In most cases, if you measure and buy the right item, you won’t need to cut the railing. However, in situations where it doesn’t fit in well, you might have to trim it to size. Use an abrasive saw to do it easily.

What if I have a completely different configuration altogether?

We can help plan out your entire railing system, regardless of what your space looks like. If your configuration isn't mentioned here, please feel free to reach out to us via call/text or fill the form on our website. Our team will provide you with a customized list of items.

If i send the dimensions of my space, will you custom-cut the parts and send?

This is not a provision when it comes to CR Fence & Rail products. Our products are pre-cut in standard/fixed sizes only. You can choose the size/length variation that is the closest fit for your space, and then measure & trim it as needed.
