How to Convert Stairs Handrail (CRHR) to Horizontal / Flat Railing
First of all, it would be easiest if you can purchase the CRFR4 and CRFR6 (the CR Handrail Flat Horizontal Railing in 4 feet or 6 feet sections). Everything will be set up perfectly for you.
Otherwise, if you MUST convert your current CRHR (handrails) for flat application, there are 2 things you should be aware of:
- You will need a new set of post to top rail brackets as well as post to middle rail bracket.
- The brackets will be the same; the post to top rail connection, the bracket will be going inside the post (instead of on the outside).
- The rail when laid flat will be longer than at an angle on the stairs (when considering the horizontal distance).
- The implication of this is that the middle rail will NOT stretch across if the post where to meet the same pre-drilled holes/bracket position on the top rail.
- You should install the middle rail first since that’s the limiting factor before installing the top rail.
- The top rail installation will require you to use self-drill screws to attach the bracket to a position besides the pre-drill holes.
- You should install the middle rail first since that’s the limiting factor before installing the top rail.
- The implication of this is that the middle rail will NOT stretch across if the post where to meet the same pre-drilled holes/bracket position on the top rail.
Modification Installation Instruction (Slight Modification From Original Instructions)
- Assuming you plan to use the middle rail, you will follow all other instructions expect you will install the middle rail first.
- Install the brackets for the middle rail and middle rail. You can secure the middle rail now with self drilling screws on each side if it’s already on flat surface.
- Position the 2 post + middle rail into position and install ground attachments (refer to original instructions).
- Install top rail by inserting the top rail brackets into the post.
- Ensure the top rail is even on both sides, then using selfdrilling screws to secure the top rail brackets to top rail.
- Using self drilling screws, secure top rail brackets to post by drilling through the top of the post through both the post wall and the bracket.
- If no middle rail is required, install the top rail brackets (step 1.c, 1.d, 1.e) and then 1.b.
