How to Cut Metal

Cutting the CR Handrail can be done easily; however, we recommend you or your installer have an abrasive saw & a metal filer.

I have a chop saw already; can I use that to cut metal?

Yes, but you MUST use an abrasive saw disk.  There are different saw disk sizes; when buying the saw disk, make sure you pay attention to the size of the disk needed.

Can I use a handheld circular saw?

It is most ideal to have a cut-off / chop saw over a circular saw as it will give you easier accurate cuts and cleaner cuts.

If you do use a circular saw, we recommend putting masking tape over the cut area to prevent the circular saw guide from scratching the metal.

Can I ask CR Handrail to cut the metal?

Not only will you have to pay a premium for the cuts, there’s also a premium from shipping (we’ve strategically positioned our inventory across US to achieve a low logistics cost we can pass onto our customer).  Because cuts must be done at one of our approved facilities, there’s a much higher cost to ship from a further distance + extra handling and processing fees.  It is common for the shipping cost to far exceed the item cost.

In addition, it’s a good rule of thumb to cut to size on site as there will always be variability in the installation.  There’s a high chance there will be an issue with the rail being cut too short and there is no fix for that except to trash the metal.  All special cuts are final and you must accept the risk that the sizing might not all fit properly.   The only type of handrail kit we recommend cutting to size is the CRHR4Ext (which is merely 1 extension piece from stairs handrail to side of house).
